For those of you who tuned in to the Hometalk Facebook Live Segment on mine and Rob's house a few weeks ago, you may remember someone tuning in and suggesting I do a rain gutter bookshelf project. You may also remember Miriam relaying a shout out from an audience member named Alex, telling me that, "Bo says, 'hi mommy!'" I knew that one of my best friends here on Long Island, Alex, was tuning in for the segment at her house while she babysat my son (Bo), but I had no clue until after the segment that she was the one who suggested rain gutter bookshelves. I wanted to do this project in Bo's room but I'm literally all out of space in there so I decided to put them together for Alex's son's nursery instead. She was super pumped when I asked her if I could do them at her house and I'm so excited to introduce this project to y'all! It took a little while for me to figure out what in the world I was doing but overall, it ended up being fairly easy and I'm so happy with the finished product.

Making a Bench From Head & Foot Boards

If you're like me, you may think that making a bench from a head and foot board would be an easy task. Then, you'd be as wrong as I was! It was challenging, but do-able! I found this great head and foot board at a garage sale for $20. I would have asked her to take less, but I was a bumbling idiot because I was so giddy over the idea of being able to do this!!! And, I knew it was a great price! It took us 2 loads to get all of it home (and the other table we bought from her) in our mini-van (the back seat lays down, so I like to call it my pick-up truck). Off to work. There had been some damage and that got glued back together. I knew that since there had been damage, it wasn't going to be worth as much as a bed. I didn't want to have to buy any extra for this piece. Any wood that I used had been part of the original bed. Steps: 1. Cut the foot board. I really wanted to keep the embellishment, but that wasn't going to happen. My husband cut it with a circular saw. That's out of my ability range! 2. I took the rails to make the bench. Nothing was screwed together yet because I wanted to make sure I was going to have everything set first. 3. I made sure everything was level and used clamps to help keep the bench part with the even with the back (headboard). I didn't have a large enough clamp, so I just hooked two together. It actually worked really well! 4. We made sure there was enough support for the bench by using one of the side rails for the front of the bench (where the backs of a person's knees and shins would be while sitting). 5. Then we put the bed's support boards in for the seat. There was a gap at the back. Of course. 6. I used the other side board for the gap in the back. It makes the bench's back have a little more support, which I really like. 7. I filled in all the holes from the screws with wood filler. 8. I painted it with Annie Sloan's Old White in a mix-matched pattern. 9. I distressed the lines. 10. I clear waxed with Annie Sloan's wax and wiped it off. 11. I dark waxed it and wiped it all off. This says 11 steps, but believe me, it was WAY more! Hopefully you get the idea! I love how she turned out!

Dog Food Storage Armoire

For those of you with dogs, you know that there needs to be a designated area in the home where their food, toys, bones and other random items stay. Our waterfront cottage does not have a lot of storage. Closets are decent but on the small side and we do not have any extra storage space in the laundry closet. I had a hard time adjusting to having such a small laundry space when we first moved. I was missing our utility room in our New Orleans house. It was very big and we were able to store all the dogs stuff and food in there as well as the vacuum, ironing board and extra toiletries. When we first moved back to Texas, the dog food was stored in the guest room and we fed them in the hallway. Their leashes were usually left in the living room chair and bones were stored in the cabinet. Obviously, not a permanent solution but it worked. Their stuff needed to be easy to access since we feed them twice a day and I wanted it to be hidden. I had been thinking about using a dresser for storage but I already had 2 in our living space. The buffet, which was my grandparents' dresser, in the kitchen and our entertainment center. Then I came across a bedroom set for sale on our neighborhood forum. I knew as soon as I saw it, that the armoire was exactly what I needed.

Transforming a wood armoire into a painted treasure!

I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint for this project. The first 2 coats were French Linen, then a thinned coat of Old White. I mixed clear and dark wax with a little French Linen paint and waxed the entire piece. I painted the hardware with Graphite and waxed.
