How to Decorate a Tablescape
-
Choose a color and a theme
- Opt for around three colors: two neutrals and one accent color. The neutrals should make up the largest portion of the decoration.
-
Start with a base layer
- Use a centerpiece, such as a large dinner plate, for your base layer. There’s no hard and fast rule about color, but try to stick to the theme.
-
Think practically
- Consider what you or your guests will need during dinner and don’t forget to save space for it, whether that’s serving dishes or drinks.
-
Choose your texture
- You can add a reflective or gloss texture, with silverware or vases, or a coarse and natural texture, with hessian napkins.
-
Add the final details
- Your accents and decorations needn’t be fancy. A centerpiece can be as simple as a few beautiful small vases with leaves and tealight candles.

Rustic and Lace Thanksgiving Tablescape
I wanted to do something different with my Thanksgiving Tablescape this year. So I came up with the idea of instead of having a typical runner or placemats, I would make 2 runners and use them as long placemats. I also decided to use the unexpected lace. I love the way it turned out.

Sea Shell Centerpiece Beach Tablescape
A few days ago I posted Fish Accent Light - Wish I was at the Beach. It was a Sea Shell buffet vignette. But I also wanted to do a Shell centerpiece for the dinning room table. I went to Garden Ridge, a garden warehouse outlet (my new friend, love that store) and purchased two shell bowls, only $5.98 each. Excited to do my centerpiece I put them on the table. My husband walks by and ask, "why are you putting ashtrays on the table?" I busted out in laughter, "OMG Really, is it that bad?" He just shook his head and walked away. Ok, I thought I really need to do something creative here. This is what I created. Please tell me they don't look like ashtrays. But if they do, I'll keep trying until I get it right. Anyway, here's my shell centerpiece.

Thanksgiving Tablescape...Burlap and White Pumpkins
I love the contrast of elegant touches with rustic natural elements! Using my ruffled burlap table runner (tutorial on my blog) as a base, I layered in white pumpkins, gourds and bittersweet then added mercury glass and my mom's vintage silverware for some holiday sparkle!

Free Vase to Silver Candelstick Fall Tablescape
While shopping at a local thrift store I came across the "free" box. These vases were tossed in for anyone to have. I saw such potential so I scooped them.
Thrifted Fall Tablescape
When decorating our home for fall, I am not the traditional orange, brown and yellow type of girl. I have always steered toward the more non-traditional colors for fall. The first year we lived in our home I chose to work with a purple, cream and green color scheme and I loved it. So when I came across the Harvest Time pattern of Johnson Brothers Ironstone plates at Goodwill, I knew the plates were a great starting point for this years fall decor.

Build a Basic Tablescape Box
I've (Steph) been a Gilmore girls fan since season one. When I heard that it was coming back I was so excited! My first thought, I have to watch each episode again in preparation for the new show. My second thought, we have to make a DIY project in honor of Gilmore girls! With the new show being called "Gilmore girls: A Year in the Life," we knew our DIY had to incorporate the seasons in some way. Who doesn't want a little Gilmore girls all year round?! So grab some coffee and a mallomar and enjoy "Gilmore girls: A Seasonal DIY Tablescape."
Thrifted Vintage Spring Tablescape
This Spring I used some of my thrifted collections of milk glass, pressed glass, and vintage linens in my tablescape on our porch. None of them are expensive, just pieces I find in thrift stores.
Creating A Fall Tablescape
My thought for a Fall Tablescape this year was wrapped around the fact that we are living back in the beautiful northwest. We are surrounded by pine trees, lakes, wild life, etc… It’s a gorgeous place to live and with all this natural beauty I knew I should be able to fill our table with natural elements.
Golden Orb Thanksgiving Tablescape
I love thinking of new ways to bring dramatic visual style to the table, whether it's for a special event, Thanksgiving, or a wedding. This year for Thanksgiving, I decided to suspend hundreds of gold orbs over the table. It was very magical.
